The biogeochemistry of nitrous oxide in permanently ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

چکیده
This manuscript presents an overview of published work on nitrous oxide in the permanently ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. One of these lakes contains the highest concentration of nitrous oxide reported for natural aquatic systems (> 500 000% with respect to the global average mixing ratio in air). Recent data on nitrous oxide from the major lakes in this region of Antarctica are used to draw general conclusions regarding sources and sinks for this gas within the liquid water column, and to estimate exchanges with the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide maxima are usually found in regions where oxygen concentrations and redox potentials are decreasing (i.e. where high gradients exist); nitrous oxide is virtually absent in anoxic, and very low redox zones. These trends, together with positive relationships between apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and apparent nitrous oxide production (ANP) indicate that nitrous oxide is primarily a product of nitrification; experiments showed that denitrification is a sink for this gas in anoxic water. ANP/AOU ratios are several orders of magnitude higher than that for the ocean. Yield ratios for nitrous oxide [ANP/(NO2+ NO3-)] averaged 4.2% (i.e. 1 atom of N appears in nitrous oxide for every 24 atoms appearing in oxidized N), greatly exceeding existing reports for pelagic systems, being similar to that from reduced sediments. Production and consumption rates, computed with a one-dimensional diffusion model, ranged from 0 to 5.3 nM-N d-l and 0-2.7 nM-N d-l, respectively. Rates were usually greatest in the region of largest oxygen and inorganic nitrogen gradients. Turnover times averaged 2917 and 1277 years for production and consumption which is in the range of the mixing times for the lakes. Areal flux from the lakes to the atmosphere (6.17 gN m-2 y-l) is several hundred times greater than areal fluxes reported for oceanic systems. Owing to the relatively small combined surface area of these lakes, absolute atmospheric transfer (1.2 X 105 gN y-l) is only a small fraction of annual global emission.

Perchlorate and chlorate biogeochemistry in ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
We measured chlorate (ClO3 ) and perchlorate (ClO4 ) concentrations in ice covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDVs) of Antarctica, to evaluate their role in the ecology and geochemical evolution of the lakes. ClO3 and ClO4 are present throughout the MDV Lakes, streams, and other surface water bodies. ClO3 and ClO4 originate in the atmosphere and are transported to the lakes by surface in...

The permanently ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica are distinctive ecosystems that consist strictly of microbial communities. In this study, water samples were collected from Lake Vanda, a stratified Dry Valley lake whose upper waters (from just below the ice cover to nearly 60 m) are highly oligotrophic, and used to establish enrichment cultures. Six strains of psychrotol...
متن کاملStable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotopic Composition of Benthic and Pelagic Organic Matter in Lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
The perennially ice-covered lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, are part of the coldest and driest ecosystem on earth. To understand lacustrine carbon and nitrogen cycling in this end-member ecosystem, and to define paleolimnological proxies for ice-covered lakes, we measured the stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of particulate organic matter (POM) and benthic organic ma...
متن کاملImpact of Episodic Warming Events on the Physical, Chemical and Biological Relationships of Lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
Lakes in the Taylor Valley, Antarctica were investigated to determine the impact of a significant air temperature warming event that occurred during the austral summer of 2001–2002. The warming in the valleys caused an increase in glacial run-off, record stream discharge, an increase in lake levels, and thinning of the permanent ice covers. These changes in the physical environment drove subseq...
متن کاملThe carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in perennially ice-covered Antarctic lakes: searching for a biogenic signature
The stable-isotopic signature of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) has been routinely used in temperate lake systems to investigate the biogeochemical dynamics of carbon. We studied seven perennially ice-covered lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, to ascertain how carbon cycling affects the dC of DIC in water columns of these systems. Unlike temperate lakes and, in fact, most polar lak...
